The Wandering Knight
I
INT. JAPANESE RESTAURANT – NIGHT
An ITALIAN FAMILY of five gather around a hibachi having a good time with a birthday celebration.
Balloons and streamers surround the table. So do MAFIA BODYGUARDS.
MOM (upper 20s) ruffles BIRTHDAY BOY’s (12) hair.
His SIBLINGS (5-10) cackle with glee at the performance of —
— The HIBACHI CHEF (40s) juggling a spatula and a meat fork.
HIBACHI CHEF
(in Japanese)
Keep your eye on the egg.
He juggles an egg with the spatula, inciting applause and laughter.
The Chef grabs two more eggs, but accidentally loses control – one of the eggs flies at Mom.
HIBACHI CHEF
Whoops, watch out!
She startles – the fake egg bounces – Mom cracks up.
HIBACHI CHEF
Keep back now. This one gets dangerous.
The Chef squirts something onto stacks of onions on the grill and a huge flame geysers upwards.
Mom and the kids rear back in awe. The Birthday Boy cheers, glancing at his Dad.
His jovial demeanor crashes when he sees —
— DAD (30s) working on his phone – totally oblivious.
The Chef peeks at the Birthday Boy, with the briefest moment of conflict in his eyes.
HIBACHI CHEF
Here comes the fun part.
He tosses the meat fork into the air.
The power goes out – total blackness – save for Dad’s phone lighting him up with an eerie glow.
